From 1933 to 1945, a man named Adolf Hitler was the dictator of Germany. In the 1920’s Hitler founded a German political party called the National Socialist German Worker’s Party (NSDAP), colloquially abbreviated as "Nazi." Hitler was a charismatic, if inherently evil, politician.

His political "platform" could be summarized:

• Germans are the "master race" of Europe
• Germany must expand to become an empire and provide Lebensraum (living space) for Germans
• Germany has insidious, evil enemies that constrict Germany. These enemies were the real reason  Germany lost World War I
• These enemies are Jews, Bolsheviks (Communists) and other "subhumans"
• Hitler and the Nazi party will destroy Germany’s enemies and remake Germany into the most powerful nation of the world

Hitler and Nazi party glorified violence, war, and military might. As a consequence, most Nazi party organizations became paramilitary organizations - with uniforms, flags, weapons, and so on. The first Nazi paramilitary groups were called Storm Troopers, or Sturm Abteilung (SA) in German. The SA helped propel Hitler into power, but it eventually became too big and unreliable for Hitler to control - so he had the SA leadership killed soon after assuming power in 1933.
